A small Japanese porcelain plate of Kutani ware. The Ai Kutani, or blue and white Kutani, dish with a dramatic geometric design of three scattered round medallions on a divided ground. One medallion with a phoenix over a white ground contrasted by a blue and a white circle over a karakusa, or arabesque, ground. Dishes of this size were quite popular and traditionally used as a small side dish at meals. They came to be called go sun zara", or “Five Sun Dish”. The sun being a traditional measurement roughly equivalent to an inch. With a small crack to the rim.
