A pair of Japanese stone Inari shrine foxes. Generally made of wood or ceramic, stone images of Inari foxes are quite rare. The fox (kitsune) is the guardian spirit of the rice fields and herald-messenger (misaki) to the Shinto rice god, Inari Myôjin. One of the figures with his mouth slightly open, one with its mouth closed, mouthing the phrase A-UnA-Un is a Sanskrit term adopted by Buddhism, which refers to the all encompassing nature and knowledge of Buddha and of Yin-Yang opposition and interdependenceWith minor damage and loss to ears from age.
