Details

A Japanese chrysanthemum-shaped (kiku) carved granite water basin (mizubachi). Low water basins are often used as decorative garden elements, but originally were used in association with the tea ceremony. Outside the teahouse a low water basin is placed for guests to ritually cleanse their hands and mouth before they enter the teahouse. The basin is generally placed beside a large flat stone for the guest to rest, a bamboo spigot to providing water, and a small lantern for nighttime gatherings.
