A small framed piece of calligraphy by Soseki Yamamoto (山本素石) (1919-1988) an essayist and considered the father of modern Japanese tenkara fishing. The calligraphy reading “Chinju” (椿寿), literally “camellia long life” a wish for long life taken from Zhuang Zhou, 4th century BC philosopher and writer and his eponymous collection of writings, zhuangzi, the foundational scriptures of Taoism. Soseki Yamamoto was a proponent of tenkara fishing which reduced everything down to its most fundamental form. While comparable to Western fly-fishing tenkara only used a non-composite bamboo pole, line and a fly, no reel is used.
