Details

An usual hanging Japanese copper lantern. The lantern with overall openwork pattern resembling hexagonal plaiting basket weave. The two sides of the lantern with large pierced plover, chidori, shaped openings. The hexagonal weave of the lantern recalling gabion (jakago), stone filled baskets used to protect shorelines, which in combination with the chidori shorebird reinforces the water theme of the lantern. The side of the lantern with a rectangular opening possibly to allow access to the interior candle. The top of the lantern with two lungs for suspension. With minor wear and damage from age.
