Details

A small Japanese mingei, folk art, carved wood sculpture of a sleeping cat. The bobtailed cat, which is prevalent in Japan, became more common in Japan when in 1602 the Shogunate decreed that all cats should be released and unharmed in the hope they would help protect the silkworm industry from vermin. The cat, already a popular subject in Japanese art, continued to this day from the maneki neko, beckoning cat, to Hello Kitty. The carving with minor chips and wear.
