Details

A Japanese iron bound granite festival pounder. The stone, gorin ishi or Inoshi ishi, is used at the Inoko matsuri, a festival on the day of the boar in boar month. The festival celebrates the return of Toshigami, a god of harvest, to the home from the rice fields. Children go from home to home doing a song and performance in which they pound the ground with this stone suspended from ropes. It is thought to bring wealth and good fortune to the home and in return the children receive mochi sweets, or other treats. The Inoko festival is celebrated across Japan but children using pounders is limited to small regions of Japan. Stone pounders are rare, they are usually made of wood or bundled straw or sticks
