A negoro tray base. The tray with heavy wear from use. Negoro refers to 12th-17th century utilitarian lacquer ware of red lacquer over a base of black lacquer, which became highly sought after because of the wear and beauty it optains over time. The lacquer is named for the Negoro temple complex and headquarters of Buddhist Shingi Shingon Sect in Wakayama Prefecture where the lacquer was produced for everyday use at the temple. It flourished under Ashikaga patronage during the Muromachi Period and existed for 300 years until Shogun Hideyoshi destroyed the temple complex due to the uprising of its warrior-monks.  With contemporary metal mount.
