An unusual Japanese wood friction lock, yokogi, from an adjustable pot hook, jizaikagi, in the shape of a rabbit (usagi) running on waves. The rabbit with wear and fine patina from smoke and cleaning. The yokogi could adjust the height of the hook above the irori, or sunken hearth fire. The rabbit is a symbol of abundance, fecundity and longevity. It is traditionally thought that a rabbit resides in the moon eating mochi rice cakes of longevity. A rabbit running on waves is an allusion to the refection of the full moon reflecting off the water. The representation of water was also thought to protect the house from fire.With cracks, wear and damage from age.
