A Japanese two panel screen depicting a scene of hanami, or cherry blossom viewing. The screen with a group of people including one holding a large parasol under a large cherry tree in full bloom surrounded by a wattle fence. Hanami, cherry blossom viewing, the subject of countless poems and paintings, and one of the most anticipated and beloved traditions of both aristocrats and commoners. Hanami is a custom which has a been a constant thread woven through Japanese history and is still hugely popular to this day, as much for the social gatherings of food and drink as for the beauty of the blossoms. The screen with only minor wear from age and use, but the hinges of the screen replaced.
