Details

A Japanese display stand (dai) with irregular form, well weather surface and dramatic grain. The plank originally from a boat, or other submerged object ,and made up of several pieces of wood and still with several butterfly splices and old forged nails. The slab repurposed to be put under a flower vase, jar, or object (okimono). Japanese aesthetics generally consider it most appropriate to place an object on an intermediary stand and not directly on a surface.  The stand is thought to help define the space as well as highlight the displayed object.
Edo Period (1600-1868)
57¼” high x 16½” at widest x 1¼” thick
