A Japanese kanban shop sign for a candle shop. The shop sign of the mokei type, in which the object being sold by the shop is represented by a model of their product. The shop sign with a white painted wooden candle floating within a keyaki (zelkova) wood surround. Both sides of the shop sign with gilt carved characters 生掛 (kigake) indicating the shop made superior hand rolled candles. The hand rolled kigake technique involved processing hasanoki berries from the mokuro tree. The center paper and rush plant wick is repeatedly rolled in wax. The time consuming technique can involve as many as one hundred rolls. With iron handles for suspension
