Details

A Japanese Furuya (古屋) type scholar’s rock or suiseki. So named for the region of Wakayama prefecture where they are found they are known for their deep crevices and indentations often with white mineral veins running through the face of the stone. Suiseki or scholar’s stones viewing is based on the appreciation of small naturally occurring or shaped rocks for their evocative nature, recalling mountains or scenery, either mythical or real. Suiseki stones are often put out on display in the tokonoma, recessed alcove, for sencha tea ceremonies, or with a bonsai or scroll.
Meiji Period (1868-1912)
Approximately 9 ½” long x 6" high x 5 ½” wide
