Details

A very rare Japanese screen (byobu) covered with various textile fragments. The textiles samples include examples from Japan, China, India and Indonesia. The group of textiles laid out in a dramatic fashion with columns broken by diagonal bands of alternating textiles framed with silver leaf. This screen of textiles likely represents the textile collection of a collector or textile shop that had chosen to mount them as a screen for ease of display. With some loss, staining and damage from age and use.
Edo Period (1600-1868)
165¼” (13’-9“) wide x 68” (5’-8“) high
