A fine Japanese folding six panel screen (byobu) with scattered medallions on a finely painted ground. Each floating medallion of colored and in some cases gilt decorated paper with a poem, all floating above a painting of a willow tree. The willow (yanagi) was traditionally thought to have protective qualities and is closely associated with spring and feminine beauty. Several other flowering plants are depicted below and at the base of the willow, including orchids (ran), azalea (tsutsuji), low bamboo (sasa) and dandelions (tampopo). With old repairs, damage, stains and wear from use and age.
