Details

An unusual hanging Japanese copper lantern. The two sides of the lantern with large pierced plover, chidori, shaped openings against a overall hexagonal openwork pattern. The hexagonal weave of the lantern recalling gabion (jakago), stone filled baskets used to protect shorelines, which in combination with the chidori shorebird reinforces the water theme of the lantern. The side of the lantern with a rectangular opening to allow access to the interior. The top of the lantern with two lungs for suspension. With minor wear and damage from age.
19th century
15½" high x 17½" wide x 10½" deep
