A Japanese spring themed six panel folding screen (byôbu) with dramatic sumi-e ink painting on a gold leaf (kinpaku) ground. The screen depicts a mated pair of pheasants resting on a old plum tree. The pheasant and plum tree are traditional symbols of spring.The call of the pheasant is closely associated with spring. A small grove of bamboo is to the left. Bamboo is a symbol of strength and flexibility, traits to be emulated. With minor wear and damage from age and use.
